Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by raised pink plaques or silver-white scales on the skin resulting from the over-production of new skin cells. There are multiple varieties of psoriasis (plaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis, scalp psoriasis, and nail psoriasis). Psoriasis typically manifests between the ages of 15 and 25, but it can develop at any age. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, though there is often both a hereditary link and exposure to a trigger (stress, strep throat, a bad sunburn, or trauma to the skin). Smoking and obesity may also be triggers for some types of psoriasis. Psoriasis treatments do not cure the underlying condition but effectively treat and manage the symptoms. These treatments include topical medications, oral or injectable systemic medications, biologic treatments, and laser/light therapy.
