Cysts & Lipomas

Cysts occur when the top layer of the skin grows into the middle layer of the skin (sometimes due to injury or blocked hair follicles). This results in a firm, dome-shaped, skin-colored growth that generally moves when touched or pressed upon. Cysts can occur anywhere but are most common on the face, neck, scalp, or trunk. Cysts may become inflamed and painful and may rupture, causing significant discomfort. Cysts may be surgically treated if symptomatic.

Lipomas are slow-growing fatty lumps occurring between the skin and underlying muscle. Lipomas typically feel doughy and move when touched or pressed upon. Lipomas are typically harmless and treatment is not generally required. Lipomas that are bothersome or growing may be surgically treated.
